The 64-slice CT can produce detailed pictures of any organ in a few seconds and provide sharp, clear, three-dimensional images of organs and blood vessels, which facilitates early diagnosis and treatment. Features include production of images much faster than possible with current 4-slice and 16-slice scanners, improved fine detail resolution, and improved post-processing for treatment planning. This makes it easier for doctors to spot potential problems such as tumors, types of cancer, and cardiac ailments.
One of the premier uses of the 64-slice scanner is to perform CT Coronary Angiography. Using advanced computer technology, reconstructing the information into 3-D views of the heart and the coronary arteries shows not only narrowed areas of the blood vessels, but also early disease in the vessel walls that currently cannot be detected by any other noninvasive test and will often change treatment. This procedure provides patients an alternative to invasive angiography and is ideal for those patients unable to tolerate the conventional procedure.
Edward J. Danehy, MD, radiologist at Radiology Regional Center, says “64-slice CT Coronary Angiography is revolutionizing the way we detect and treat coronary heart disease. We believe this test will help save lives by discovering the early signs of coronary artery disease and getting patients the appropriate treatment before they have a heart attack.”
